The research project is a cooperation between the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, School of Architecture and Philips Corporate Technologies, Research (The Netherlands).

Built by light builds on Mark Garcia’s terminology of “Textilisation of architecture” and “Architecturalisation of textiles” (2006, pp. 5-12), which describes “a textile way of thinking and doing architecture” and  “an architectural way of thinking and doing textile design”, and introduces the phenomena of “Textilisation of light” and “Architecturalisation of light” as conceptual approaches to identify and characterize design variables for design with textiles and future lighting technologies as e.g. LEDs in an architectural context.

One part of the aim of the research is to develop principles for future architectural components and another is to formulate a cross-disciplinary language to describe these phenomena, mediating between the different practices and relating to the different parts of the design process.
